New things.

  • You may or may not have noticed that I rearranged a few things.    Nothing major, just this there that over here... etc.  BUT!  I also added threaded comments so you can reply to specific comments instead of just to the post in general.  Since I have a whopping 2 commenters, it's not a huge deal but I am happy.  :)  Also I added lovely little snow flakes for "winter" (not here of course, other places) but don't fret, if they annoy you, they are gone in 13 seconds.  If you love them, just refresh.  :P  (If you are looking for something that was there, and now "isn't" check the bottom of the page, it's probably there.)

  • Jason starts working with me tomorrow.  Not sure exactly what he will be doing, but I do know that alphabetizing is in his near future.

  • While finishing up our Christmas shopping today, I was thrilled to find The Nightmare Revisited.  Not only is it awesome that they keep coming out with new Nightmare stuff (like last year watching it in 3-d was the best thing of the entire year!) but now it includes some of my favorite artists.  :)

Yay!

The Day of D's (Disaster, Disappointment, Destruction, Dummies and Dresses!)

Disaster
The day started out going to ITT Technical Institute to look at their programs.  We were going for "me" but I knew that they had game design programs, so I dragged Jason along hoping something might spark his interest, since we both know there is no way that we could ever afford for him to go to UAT.  However, there was no luck for either of us there, and the adviser I saw was so pushy and not knowledgeable that she didn't really promote the school well.  She kept trying to push other degrees off on me for computer technology, when I specifically walked in there saying, I want a Bachelor's in design, I saw online you have a program.  Well, she knew nothing of that program, and tried to shove game design off on me, and I kept telling her no, I want to build webpages, do advertising logos, stuff like that, oh, well how about Computer Aided Drafting?  No, I want to build webpages!  So we are walking down the hall, and she's showing us all these posters of the different classes, and asks me, "How about Criminal Justice!?!"  No!  What the hell does Criminal Justice have to do with the main reason I was here.  Needless to say, Jason and I left there both very, very frustrated.

Disappointment
So who remembers when Jason made fun of me for planning way to far in advance for his tastes?  I know I do, and it backfired in his face yesterday when we approached our first reception destination.  While absolutely stunning and beautiful, The Waterfront, is already booked for October 3, 2009.  We decided to look around anyway in case we decide to change our date (which I don't want to do.)  It was absolutely gorgeous, and everything sounded great there.  The people were really nice, it was relatively easy to find, and the price was right (or as right as it can be for the poor kids.  :P)  Fortunately/unfortunately for us, they were setting up for a wedding so they had some stuff set up, but a lot of stuff was still in the works (like in the Bridal suite and hallways, and such.)  But anyway, here are some pictures:

When I realized what time it was, I quickly called the person whom I told that we couldn't meet on Friday with, and asked if she still had an oppening for us to go visit The Farm.  It was a very quaint, and cute place, and another one that Jason liked.  We headed over, and it was a pain in the ass to find.  We met with the coordinator, who was nice, but eh, there was something about her that neither one of us liked.  The place, despite the outside part, was not really well kept in our eyes, and they had tons of restrictions, like no confetti or fake flowers, the bridal suite was tiny (and with no bathroom), you had to use their caterer, whose food was very pricey, and the fact that she told us they were "pruning" their trees and you could tell that the debris on the ground had been there a long time.  It was a nice retreat from the regular Phoenix atmosphere, but I don't know having to hike through a 2 inch mount of pine needles and leaves mixed with dirt, didn't sound like the place for us.  At one point, Jason said, I walked through the dirt, not over it.  Yuck.  Also, they make you park across the street (and it's already a hike to get around there) and you can rent a golf cart for anyone who needs assistance.  That seemed kind of off to me... that should definitely be something provided to those who can't walk or have trouble doing so, not an extra fee.  Needless to say, this was also not the place for us.  Here are some pictures anyway:

Dummies
After we finish with the two venues, we started to head downtown to get Jason's check.  The entire thing about Jason's check is ridiculous.  Every Wednesday for the last 6 months, his check had been deposited into our bank account.  It wasn't in this Wednesday and I told Jason, he forgot, and ended up calling on Thursday to make sure it was even turned in.  The goofy ditz (I can say that, I met / saw her yesterday) told him, without even checking that technically it doesn't have to be in his account until Friday, but he should have it by then.  So Friday morning rolls around and still no check.  So he calls the company again, and they tell him, oh, sorry, since it's your final check you have to come pick it up.  What kind of crap is that for a temp agency; especially since they just offered him another job the night before**?!  I personally think that it's bullshit that because one job ended, and he is still technically "employed" by them as they are still actively looking for placement, that it's not his "final" check.  What about those people who do a different job every week?  They have to drive 30 minutes to get their check?  Lame.

Destruction and Dummies (continued) with the added fun of Dresses!
So while we're in the pits of hell (downtown) I told him to head to the dress shop!  We decide to skip the freeway, and take surface streets because (technically) it's close.  Wrong-o.  Forgetting that downtown has a stop light every 10 feet makes it a long trip.  Also, they are test running the Lightrail, which wow, I can't even believe the way it's set up.  I guarantee you when they open streets up again, there will be many, many deaths.  First, we saw it turn left in front of 4 lanes of cars.  That was crazy.  God forbid someone be over the line at a stop light or run it, then SMASH, there they go.  And that's not even accounting for those really stupid people that shouldn't even be driving. For example, there are signs posted everywhere, DO NOT DRIVE OR STOP ON TRACKS. We didn't see anyone driving on the tracks but we saw at least two people actually stopped on them.  One of them to make a left turn against a RED and one, who knows what he was doing besides just kinda chillin' on the tracks.  Also, they have the entire area torn up, its all these huge like 3-5 square blocks of asphalt taken out of the ground that are probably anywhere from 2-6 inches deep so its like you're constantly hitting pot-holes.  Ugh, it was a bad trip.  But we finally got to AZTECA Plaza where they have every possible wedding need in the universe.  We first went into the dress shop.  Jason went in with me, I know, how shocking and un-traditional, but once I told them the dress I had found online, he was sent away, and I was sent upstairs to go look at dresses.  I picked out a total of 4, as they didn't have the exact dress that I wanted, but they had one very similar.  Online you can't even tell, but apparently the fabric is different, and the bead work is a bit different as well.  I tried on all the dresses except for the one that was similar to the one I saw online, and I wasn't really impressed with anything.  I definitely saved the best for last.  Once I tried the dress on, I loved it!  The bead work (versus the original one I liked) can be customized with several different colors, and of course the one I had on was purple!  The dress I tried on was too big for me, so the corset back didn't really work, and she had to pin it up.  She put a veil on me, and I thought I was going to cry.  It was perfect!  She asked if I wanted Jason to come up, and I said yes (on with tradition :P) we were a few yards apart because no boys are allowed upstairs, but he seemed to like it as well.  I asked about purchasing, and she said that it takes about 4 1/2 months to get the dresses in, and you have to put down 50% when you order it.  I'm pretty sure she said it was around $495, so that shouldn't be too difficult to do once we get back on our feet when Jason starts working again, we just need to hurry, hurry!  No camera's (along with boys) we allowed in their building, so these are the only pictures I can conjure up:

Next week, we hope to look at these three golf resorts, so wish us luck!

The End.  : )

** He will not be taking that job, because while the price is right, its a temporary job, that would interfere with him getting a permanent job in January with his old employer, or Schwab, should they actually pull through.

Getting along with the neighborhood kids...

That's right.  My first post is going to be about me fighting playing with the neighborhood hellians children.

First off, let me start by saying that I am not racist, I just disagree with the parenting styles used by people in the hispanic culture.

With that said:  Lucy has recently had some looming fear/hatred for children.  She doesn't lash out at them or anything, she just cowers in fear.  If she is behind our gates, however, she goes freaking crazy.  Being as how I am now unemployed, I was home today and had left the dogs out front to play (we have a gated front yard).  I had a few windows throughout the house open and was amazed when I heard the voice of a demon child barking.  Not my child with fur, but a human child.  My child (Lucy) then started barking back.  Lucy was going crazy like she does when kids pass too close to the house, jumping against the fence, hair on her back raised and all.  I could faintly hear the demon child still barking, so I went to the door and quickly opened it.  I opened the door to a little mexican girl, between 7 and 10 years of age (I'm bad with ages), turning to run at the end of my driveway.  So I followed her home and told her parents.  (Come on...does that really sound like me?)  I called after her "Hold on just a second" in my sweetest voice.  She stopped, turned back around, and walked back to stand at the end of the driveway.  I walked out and calmed Lucy and Landon down, because even he was riled up at this point.  Then I looked to the little girl.  Again, in my sweetest voice, I said, "If I catch you barking at them again, I am going to open the gate and let them out and they will bite you."  After that, she kinda bolted.

I am sick...and I need help...but the world made me this way.  I can't afford therapy, so this is my rehab.

On a similar topic, the dogs have learned to open car windows.  We decided to take the doogs with us to drop our movie off at a RedBox.  Amanda ran the movie in while I drove around the Walgreen's parking lot with the kids.  As I get to the end of the parking lot and start to turn around, I hear that bvoooooooooooo sound that the windows make.  I turn around just in time to catch Lucy by the collar as she tries to bolt out the window.  Locks on the windows from now on...locks.

Simple Charity...

First things first:  Jason is typing a post as we speak... Oh my god, he's being involved.  Be amused.  ;)

649a1f9d11db6b6559448f0Second, this morning I was reading a blog, that I have frequented for years, Das Becca, she mentions in this post, about a girl named Ellie, and linked to a previous post of hers, which I must have missed.  Basically, it is about a little girl, Ellie, suffering from a brain tumor, who loves to receive cards.  However, unlike many hoaxes out there, this one is real.  I, of course, being the sap that I am teared up, as I read the entry, and went to the website for Ellie.  Then today, at work, while flipping through a Woman's Day, I found her ad for St. Jude's.  It's her, with her bald little head, and surgery scars, with big bold letters, "Ellie vs. Brain Tumor"  and then down the side, it says something along the lines of "let's help Ellie win."  (Edit: Found it, finally.) That was it for me.   What a brave and bold image. So tonight, I am getting her a Christmas card, and sending it off with pictures of our dogs with Santa.  I hope she will appreciate them, if I was 5, I know I'd get a kick out of it.  :P

Anyway, I encourage you all to do something as simple as buy a card and send it off to this little girl.  She is so stinkin' cute.  :)  If I can retain this information for long, I think I may send her a card every month until I forget... or they get returned because she is sent home clean and clear of cancer.  :)

Carrying on…

Ok, so where did I leave off?

So last night, I spent the majority of the night experimenting with peppermint bark. I made a double chocolate batch, and cinnamon bark, which came out… just not really as I had planned. We could not find cinnamon candy canes anywhere, so Jason suggested I try cinnamon imperials and break them up by blending them. That worked great until the blending part, which turned them into cinnamon powder, and I went ahead with it anyway. It was an “interesting” batch to say the least, and I don’t think I will be sending any of it out. I think next time I will keep them whole, they are about the size that the candy canes should be when you put them in, but then again, the candy canes, which are easy to break when you don’t want to, I had to end up wrapping in a double Ziploc bag, and then a towel, and smashing them with a hammer. The cooking life is not easy, let me tell you.

This brings me to my next item on the agenda, the cooking site. I’ve already posted a few recipes that I had from way back when, and some of the new things I’ve tried. It’s been very active as of late, but once the holidays are over, it will probably slow down a ton. But you should check some of them out. I think they are pretty tasty. :) (And they all come with a picture that isn’t all fancy-schmancy-cookbook-beautified!)  There is also a list of the most recent posted recipes off to the right.

Tonight, Jason and I went to Souper Salad, because they are cheap, give unlimited food, and provided us with a nice non-distracting environment to do Jason’s midterm (that he finally got the access code to.) We were there for about an hour, and I helped him with notes and picking out the parts he had to include in his project. It brought back bad memories, because I only took that horrible midterm two months ago. Good riddance!

We were also slightly celebrating. Because my boss is so awesome, and we are getting short-handed soon, and super busy (like really busy, like I actually want people to stop dying, we’re getting in 3-6 cases in a DAY, and have 20+ concurrent, which means super busy workload) and he said that he would hire Jason for odd jobs, but basically wanted him in the system so that he is ready to go when we need him. Jason just has to take the drug test tomorrow, and I think he’s set. He will be doing a lot of work for me, because I am currently doing two and a half jobs because no one else has time to do them (and I’m not sure why they think I do) so my paperwork has been so behind. I probably have about 50 files sitting on my desk, and the pile grows larger daily, of files that need to be finalized and filed away. We also had a HUGE project a few weeks ago which included pulling files from a specific insurance policies and a specific casket company to get rebates on caskets, which was a huge profit (well maybe not in their eyes, but it was over twenty-thousand dollars worth, so I’ve heard) so all those files (probably 100+) need to be filed away in various storage locations as well. And then there’s running. I will lose my runner, Fred, at the end of December because he is taking two weeks off, and while the job has already been asked upon someone else, she is probably going to be put on services (as we are losing a Funeral Director for surgery) and then Jason could be my runner. I don’t really know how it’s all going to work out, but at least it will be something for him to do, he’s already going stir crazy at home. Plus, haha I just can’t stop, my boss wants him to be on the payroll for future computer issues that may arise. So hopefully he will be kept busy, and I will have a load off.

The other day, I met my dream phone on TV. Tonight, before dinner, we went in to the Sprint Store, and looked at it. It is so beautiful, I could cry. It is a purple PDA flip. Since I’ve had my MotoQ for almost a year, I can’t imagine going back to a normal phone. The one thing I don’t like about my phone (well the main thing) is that I have to lock it every time I put it down, or I end up calling Guatemala! Pain in the ass, but that’s where the flippy awesomeness comes in. Santa, if you want to drop one of those beauties in my stocking, I won’t mind. ;) Did I mention it’s purple? Yeah, its purple, metallic purple, even the keys illuminate purple. I love it!

I don’t know why, because our Christmas shopping is pretty much complete, but I have been looking at home-made gifts a lot, and I’ve found a few that I thought we’re just too good to keep to myself. The first one, is more kid oriented, and is a Pocket Advent Calendar. It’s simple, it’s cheap, and it’s so adorable. I wish I had someone to make it for… although it’s a little late now. Another thing I came across was Homemade Gifts in a Jar, things like brownie or muffin mixes prepared in a jar so all you have to do is mix and bake. I’ve always thought these were cute, and very simple ideas, but again, it’s kind of late for me to do it for Christmas, especially this year, but some of them could be year-round type gifts. I am definitely bookmarking these for next year.

And lastly, something I haven’t posted about in a while: The Wedding! This Friday (well, hopefully) we are starting to look at locations. The one I am trying to set up an appointment for is the Waterfront. I found a list of wedding vendors online. The list had everything from reception sites to wedding cakes, and this one was ranked as $ versus the rest of Phoenix which was $$-$$$$ and Jason and I both really liked it. There were a few other places, but I wasn’t so big on their pictures, so we are checking this place out first. Also, I’m kind of bum on the whole wedding deal not only because of the financial situation but because of my “wedding court”. My Maid of Honor, whom I still haven’t asked, has been kind of giving me the brush off and unless I plan on asking her through MySpace, I don’t know when I’d get the “chance” to ask her in real-life time. One of the other people that I was going to ask has decided that she hates me, and until I have my Maid of Honor set, I don’t want to go any further in the asking process anyway. Ugh, I just hate this. This is supposed to be one of the most exciting times in my life, and so far, it’s been nothing but trouble. Even according to The Knot, I am behind. This is their to-do list:

  • Begin envisioning your wedding --- formal hotel or friend's loft? Backyard barbecue or exotic beach? (Eh, sort of)

  • Decide on a budget and hash out who's contributing.

  • Knot Hint: For a quick and easy way to determine a budget, use The Knot Budgeter.

  • Make sure to insure your engagement ring.

  • Pick your preferences for a wedding date and time, and finalize after okaying with important guests, location, or officiant.

  • Begin interviewing wedding consultants (if you'll have one) AND / OR start asking family AND friends for local wedding vendor recommendations.

  • Brides: It's never too early to begin thinking about your gown. Start by figuring out what style will look best on you.

  • Start interviewing caterers.

  • Scout out reception sites. (Starting)

  • Start looking for an officiant who suits your style and spirit.

  • Book your reception site as soon as you see something you love that’s available on your date.

  • If you're having an engagement party, set a date, draft a guest list, and purchase your invitations.

  • Get organized! Start a notebook/file folder to house all your wedding-planning paperwork in one place.

  • Begin working on a preliminary wedding guest list and decide on your wedding's approximate size. Request lists from both sets of parents and create your own wish list.

  • Choose your bridesmaids/groomsmen and ask them to be in the wedding party. (Hahahaha right now...)

  • Find a ceremony site if one hasn't been determined by your choice of officiant or reception site.

  • Hire a consultant (if you're having one) and sign a contract.

  • Contact newspapers to announce your engagement (you may need to have an engagement photo taken as well).

  • Choose a color scheme, if you so desire, taking into account the decor of the rooms/areas you have reserved for your ceremony and reception.

  • Decide on a caterer. Hash out a rough price per head and begin working on a menu.

  • Brides: Begin looking at pictures of wedding dresses online and in magazines.  (Being doing that since I was old enough to know what a wedding was :P)

  • Brides: When you've found some gowns you like, head out to the stores to try them on.

  • Start investigating any ethnic customs or cultural traditions you might want to incorporate into your ceremony or reception.

  • Finalize the guest list.  (Knot hint: When you’re done, make your life easy by entering everything into the Guest List Manager.)

  • Sign your caterer contract and send in a deposit.

  • Start auditioning reception bands or DJs.

  • If you've chosen an outdoor ceremony or reception site, look into tent and lighting rentals.

  • Set up appointments with various florists to discuss options.

  • Decide on and meet with your officiant to discuss ceremony structure and any religious requirements (such as counseling).

  • Interview and get price lists from several wedding photographers and videographers.

  • Book reception band or DJ, sign the contract, and send a deposit.

  • Brides: Narrow down your gown choices and make a final decision.

  • If you plan to use frequent flyer miles to travel to your honeymoon destination, book your flight now.  (Honeymoon?  Yeah, I don't think so... not even close ;/  )

The crossed out, is N/A and the bold is what we have done. Pretty sad. : ( Also, should I actually have bridesmaids, although the outlook is currently grim, this is the dress I liked for them.

Anyway, I think this is quite long enough for now, its bed time.
